July 15, Kathmandu - More than 3 million Nepali youths are currently involved in overseas employment, contributing significantly to the country\'s economy and helping reduce poverty that mars the nation, state-owned news agency RSS quoted a top official of a government agency that promotes and monitors foreign employment as saying.According to Thaneshwore Devkota, Executive Director of Foreign Employment Promotion Board, an amount to the tune of Rs 210 billion enters the country every year in the form of remittance sent by those working abroad, which has helped reduced the country\'s poverty from 42 percent to 31 percent.Speaking at a programme on foreign employment held at Dhadingbesi in Dhading Wednesday, Devkota said that although foreign employment has contributed significantly in reducing poverty in the country, young Nepali men and women who go abroad illegally without proper skills fall victim to all kinds of abuses including sexual abuse and are compelled to engage in menial jobs.He stressed upon the need to start various programs at the community level to create awareness about both the positive as well as the negative aspects of foreign employment including trainings to impart them with necessary skills needed before going abroad to work.

In line with the gradual recovery of destination countries from global economic meltdown, the number of Nepali job seekers leaving for overseas destinations saw a growth of 18.5 percent in first nine months of fiscal year 2009/10 as compared to corresponding period last year.According to data compiled by the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE), the number of Nepalese leaving for overseas jobs increased to 202,794 during the period this year from 171,244 during the same period last year.Nepali overseas job markets saw slump for a year starting November 2008. Around 18,687 Nepalese left the country for foreign employment between mid-November to mid-December 2008. A month ago, the number was around 20,514.The number of Nepali workers who left Nepal for overseas employment in April last year dipped sharply to 7,819, owing largely to global economic crisis.Nepali labour market abroad had reeled under negative growth till mid-November last year due mainly to global economic recession. The scenario, however, improved in mid-December 2009 and continued till last month of Baisakh (mid-March to mid-April).Recently unveiled data showed that 5,918 Nepalese left Nepal in Mangsir, 7,902 in Poush, 7,722 in Magh, 3,658 in Fagun and 11,456 in Chait for over six dozen destination countries. Chait (mid-March to mid-April) saw a surge in demand for Nepali workers in the destination countries with 29,555 (28.41 percent increase) Nepalese obtaining jobs as against 21,158 in the previous month. When compared with the previous year’s data, this was 38.76 percent more.
